What Is Claude?
Claude is an AI assistant made by Anthropic. Think of it as a sharp colleague who has read an enormous amount — books, contracts, research, operational playbooks — and can put that knowledge to work the moment you ask. You type a question or a task; Claude responds in plain English within seconds.
What Claude Is Good At
Claude isn't magic and doesn't replace human judgment. For specific kinds of work, it is genuinely faster than starting from scratch.
Writing and communication
Claude drafts, edits, and rewrites fast.
Example: A vendor keeps submitting incomplete invoices. You type: "Draft a firm but professional email to a vendor who has sent incomplete invoices three times. Leave room to resolve this without burning the relationship." You get a polished draft in five seconds, adjust one paragraph, send.
Summarizing long documents
A 40-page report that used to take an hour takes seconds.
Example: A client sends a lengthy statement of work. You paste it in and ask: "Summarize this in two paragraphs. Flag any unusual requirements or red flags." Claude surfaces two scope items you'd have missed on a fast skim.
Comparison and analysis
Claude can read two options and tell you how they differ.
Example: You're deciding between two supplier agreements. "Compare these two contracts. Flag any differences in payment terms, liability, and termination." You get a clean side-by-side in five minutes instead of two hours.
Other things Claude handles well
- Turning rough notes into structured reports or meeting summaries
- Brainstorming when you're stuck
- Rewriting in a different tone (more formal, more direct, shorter)
- Creating checklists, templates, and SOPs from scratch
- Answering general business questions
What Claude Is NOT
Understanding the limits saves frustration.
| What people sometimes expect | What's actually true |
|---|---|
| A live search engine | Claude works from training data by default; live web search is a specific mode you turn on |
| A database of your company's files | Claude only knows what you paste, upload, or connect |
| Always correct | Claude makes mistakes, especially on specific numbers, dates, or niche technical topics. Verify anything that matters |
| A replacement for your attorney, accountant, or engineer | Claude is a starting point, not a final authority |
| Able to act in other software on its own | Claude produces text, analysis, and drafts — it doesn't send emails or update systems unless you've connected those tools |
The most common new-user mistake is treating Claude's first answer as final. Read it critically. Ask follow-ups. Push back. Claude is built to work with you.
A Note on Privacy
Conversations are not public. Business plans (Team and Enterprise) include stronger protections — most importantly, your content is not used to train the model by default. See Lesson 14 before pasting sensitive information anywhere.
Try This Now (2 min)
- Open Claude (web or app).
- Paste in the last work email you sent, and ask: "Summarize what I was asking for in one sentence, and rate the tone from 1 (too soft) to 5 (too blunt)."
- Notice whether Claude's read matches yours. That gap is the thing you'll calibrate over the next few weeks.
